Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial myofunctional therapy at Sovereign Dental addresses dysfunctions of the mouth and face muscles, aiming to correct issues such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and inadequate lip seal. Guided by the Myofocus™ Protocols and Take Off Algorithm, therapy spans at least 8 weeks with tailored exercises and tools like Myospots and MyoMunchee. This comprehensive approach improves muscle function and oral health, supporting natural jaw development and potentially reducing the need for invasive orthodontic treatments later in life.

Orofacial myology studies the functions of the muscles in the mouth and face. When these muscles do not function properly, it can lead to orofacial dysfunctions, addressed through orofacial myofunctional therapy. This therapy aims to correct issues such as mouth breathing, atypical swallowing, overactive facial muscles, low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, open mouth posture, and incompetent lip seal.

These dysfunctions are often linked to snoring, sleep apnoea, narrow jaws, high palate, crooked teeth, tongue ties, lip ties, feeding difficulties, and jaw joint issues. Orofacial myofunctional therapy involves exercises and tools designed to improve muscle function under the guidance of specialised therapists. This approach is similar to a gym regimen for the mouth and face, combining targeted exercises with specific tools and the support of a dedicated therapist.

At The Sovereign Dental, we follow the MyofocusTM Protocols and implement the MyofocusTM Take Off Algorithm for orofacial myofunctional therapy. This algorithm classifies orofacial dysfunctions into four categories or codes, enabling us to prescribe appropriate exercises for each patient. There are over 180 exercise prescriptions, each consisting of 5 to 7 exercises. Research suggests that it takes at least two months to change a habit. Since many orofacial dysfunctions are neurologically driven and habitual, the MyofocusTM Take Off Program spans at least eight weeks.

To ensure consistent progress, patients typically have weekly visits, with no more than a fortnight between sessions. Various tools are used during therapy to complement the exercises. These include Myospots, MyoMunchee, and Lip Trainer, among others. These tools are designed to be challenging and motivating, especially for younger patients, making the therapy effective and engaging.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is also integral to our orofacial myofunctional pre- orthodontic treatment. By improving the function of the mouth and facial muscles, we can naturally develop the jaws, potentially reducing the need for more invasive orthodontic therapies later. In this context, specifically designed tools like the Myobrace and Healthy Start are used to support jaw development.

The primary goals of orofacial myofunctional therapy include improving muscle function to support overall oral health, addressing associated conditions like snoring and sleep apnea, and promoting optimal jaw development. By following the Myofocus TM Protocols and utilizing a comprehensive, individualized approach, The Myofunctional Centre aims to provide effective and holistic treatment for patients with orofacial dysfunctions
