Prevention & Screening

Preventive care involves regular dental check-ups and cleanings, while cancer screening detects early signs of oral cancer for timely treatment.

Routine Maintenance and Oral Health

Maintaining good oral health is crucial for overall well-being, as it directly impacts daily comfort and overall health. The mouth, encompassing the teeth, gums, and supporting tissues, plays a significant role in our daily lives. Neglecting oral health can lead to serious health issues, not only within the mouth but throughout the entire body. For instance, systemic diseases like diabetes, HIV, and certain eating disorders can first present symptoms in the mouth, underscoring the importance of regular and comprehensive oral exams for early detection and prevention.

Oral Health and Overall Health

Your oral health often mirrors your general health. Many systemic conditions manifest as oral symptoms, making regular dental check-ups essential for identifying and addressing these issues early. Poor oral health can have broader implications beyond visible problems like cavities, toothaches, and stained or crooked teeth. For example, gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Additionally, missing teeth can impact mental health, potentially leading to diminished self-esteem. Those with diabetes face an elevated risk of gum disease, which can further complicate blood sugar control and overall health management.

Gum Diseases

Gum disease, primarily caused by plaque buildup and bacterial infection around the teeth, is a leading cause of tooth loss after age 35. The most common initial form of gum disease is gingivitis, characterized by irritated, bleeding, and swollen gums. Gingivitis, which is prevalent by the mid-30s, can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis is a more severe condition where pockets of infection form between the teeth and gums, leading to gum recession and loss of the supporting bone. Untreated periodontitis can ultimately result in tooth loss. Several factors increase susceptibility to periodontitis, including a family history of the disease, smoking, and health conditions like diabetes or HIV.

Preventive Services We Provide

To help prevent oral diseases and maintain optimal oral health, we offer a comprehensive range of services. These include home oral care advice to guide effective brushing and flossing techniques, as well as regular oral examinations to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.

At Sovereign Dental, we also provide oral cancer screenings using an advanced screening device to detect early signs of oral cancer and perform gum health checks, including dental X-rays, to assess existing fillings and crowns. Fissure sealants are applied to prevent carious cavities, while custom-fabricated mouthguards help minimize sports-related trauma.
